The Kennebunk Improvement Association (KBIA) is a community-based,
not-for-profit organization that offers a variety of summer
recreational and enrichment programs for children, ages 4-17, in
Kennebunk Beach, ME. We're looking for an experienced, outgoing
individual to join our senior staff as the Nature and Marine Biology
Program Coordinator. The position is full-time throughout our summer
season. We require a dedicated professional who enjoys working with
kids and who can provide exemplary leadership.
The position reports to the Executive Director and is supported by
Counselors and Counselors in Training. The responsibilities of the
Nature and Marine Biology teacher include management of the
curriculum and nature staff as well as teaching the classes. Classes
are for ages 4 - 17.
Being a staff member at KBIA is much more than a summer job! It's a
remarkable experience where you will have the opportunity to impact
the lives of the KBIA community for years to come. KBIA's summer
programs run from 6/23 - 8/15 and serve over 600 children. Staff

Brief Description of Job Duties:This is a technical position that supports Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) scientists in managing and analyzing tabular and spatial (GIS) data for research on the Florida manatee and its habitat. The program collects a wide range of biological data, including mortality, aerial survey, mark-recapture, satellite and VHF telemetry, behavioral, and habitat characteristics. The person in this position is responsible for creating, maintaining, and assuring quality control of multiple databases on manatee biology and habitat; develops customized Access-based data forms and databases; locates, retrieves, and integrates biological and environmental spatial data from in-house and outside sources; and maintains metadata documentation. He/she will work under the supervision of a senior-level scientist of the program and will interact with researchers and field sta! tion staff on various projects. Assists in analyzing, modeling, and interpreting GIS and tabular data; summarizes data for papers, reports and management, as assigned. This position requires a person who is organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to communicate technical materials with others.
Desired QualificationsA bachelor's degree with a major in one of the natural sciences or geography and one year of related professional experience; or a master's degree in one of the natural sciences or geography. Qualified applicant must have knowledge of relational databases and data management principles, GIS theory and methods, and spatial analysis techniques. Applicant must have strong computer skills, including a working knowledge of relational database management tools using Microsoft Access. Successful applicant will be expected to develop customized Access databases, including data entry forms with built-in QA/QC and queries to extract relevant information. Applicant must be proficient in applying GIS skills using ArcGIS software. Good verbal and written communication skills are necessary, including the ability to work well with others in a team and to communicate GIS knowledge to team members lacking GIS experience. Qualified applicant should have skills in database quality control and problem-solving, and must be detail-oriented to succeed in this position.

Nature of the Work: This is a professional managerial position within the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program for the Department of Environmental Resources Management. Duties include supervising site managers, preparing budgets, monitoring revenues and expenditures, coordinating with partner agencies and overseeing the preparation of site management plans, plan implementation, public outreach activities and on-going site restoration and management activities.
Requirements:

internship SE Exotic Plant Management

Are you a student or recent graduate looking for something to do? Do you like to travel? The Southeast Exotic Plant Management Team is looking for dedicated interns who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. The job entails long hours of hard work and lots of travel. We need active individuals who can carry heavy backpack sprayers, operate chainsaws and ATVs in a safe manner, and perform maintenance on various types of equipment.
The Southeast Exotic Plant Management Team is a part of the National Park Service. Serving Parks in the Southeast Region, we use integrated pest management to reduce the threat of invasive, non-native vegetation to sensitive resources. Manual, mechanical, prescribed fire, and chemical techniques are used. We generally spend seven days traveling, one day performing maintenance at our office in Asheville, and six days off.
The internship is six months long. Interns receive a weekly stipend, per diem pay for travel expenses, and a possible AmeriCorps Education Award. Some housing assistance may be available. Health insurance is provided to interns for the duration of the internship. You may be eligible for college credit as well. You will be trained in exotic plant identification and eradication techniques, chainsaw and ATV operation, data collection using GPS/GIS, and equipment maintenance. If you are looking for a job in the National Park Service, or need experience in a botany/ biology related field this is a great resume builder.
Previous experience or training in botany, herbicide application, chainsaw operation, GIS or ArcMap is desired, but the only requirements are a good attitude and a willingness to learn.

We provide hands-on programs which immerse participants in the learning environment. Our topics include ecology, marine science, botany, physics, chemistry and astronomy to name a few! We offer programs from Tampa to the Florida Keys covering a diverse subject matter.

Nature's Academy is seeking 4-5 part-time seasonal staff for the 2008 season. Instructional staff lead groups of students on both outdoor and indoor adventures. Please refer to our website for a detailed description of our programs. Instructional staff must be willing to work long hours and tolerate challenging conditions in tropical sun. Additionally, applicants must be self-directed, responsible and detail-oriented. Minimum requirements are a degree in life science, teaching experience, and local knowledge of Florida flora and fauna. Applicants must have own transportation. CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard training a plus. Although these are seasonal positions, Nature's Academy hopes to grow with its employees and eventually lead to full time positions with benefits.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Represents the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute at public outreach events statewide. Coordinates event details including the design and creation of displays for specific target audiences; personnel assignments; transport, set-up and break-down of event materials; and evaluation of outreach effectiveness. Coordinates in-house public outreach activities including providing tours of FWRI and making public presentations. Functions as committee chair for the outdoor displays component of FWRI's annual open house.
Other responsibilities include managing the development of outreach products, such as brochures, teacher guides/curricula, PowerPoint presentations, and other educational tools; answering public inquiries and responding to information requests; preparing non-technical fact sheets, brochures, and articles for public outreach; and representing FWRI in certain agency-wide outreach planning efforts. Assists with other outreach projects as needed.
Note: This job requires extensive travel (including driving), public interaction and weekend work.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences with a strong background in outreach and/or education is highly recommended. The following skills and abilities are required: ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written formats; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; computer skills including Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint); ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings with extensive in-state travel (4-10 days per month); ability to lift 50 lbs and perform strenuous field activities; experience in the operation and trailering of vehicles/vessels less than 26' in length; basic knowledge of fish and wildlife issues.
